Dust- Hard Attack- 1972
The missing link between Black Sabbath and Big Star, Dust were a hard rock trio from the early ’70s whose prog instincts were tempered with occasional twangy ballads and pretty boy lyrics (although I can’t confirm if they were, in fact, attractive. My guess is not.)
The factoid that usually pops up regarding this band is that their drummer, Mark Bell, later went on to become Marky Ramone, but make no mistake: the two Dust albums are nothing like the Ramones.
The first self-titled album is a mostly uninspired affair, but the second album ramps it up many, many notches, delivering an unusual, brightly colored take (lots of swirling riffs and fills) on the hard prog sound that made Uriah Heep and Sir Lord Baltimore so wonderfully fukkin’ awesome. Highly recommended.

The Third Power- Believe- 1970
The Third Power was Detroit’s answer to Cream back in the late 60′s to early 70′s and in fact did a rendition of “I’m So Glad” that rivaled anything Cream did. Third Power was intense sonic output, a power trio that used high output vacuum tube Traynor amps and pretty much did entirely original music. And they did it at volumetric decibles that surely contributed to hearing loss among many an aged hippie; the Who had little edge in that respect save they had a bigger PA system.
Third Power was always a draw at any Detroit venue and personally my other favourite Detroit group (SRC was first even though they were from Ann Arbor). This album is purely studio; way too produced and laden with overdubs impossible to duplicate live, at least with the technology available then (multi key synthesizers were light years away) and it was not strong enough to capture the all important top 40 FM market and most importantly, did not sell well outside of Detroit and related environs.
Still, it is well worth a listen and does represent an accurate accounting of the Detroit music scene along with some decent lyrics and musicianship. Should you have liked the MC-5 or The Frost, this would be the intensity of these groups amplified with a more cerebral appeal.

Buffalo- Volcanic Rock- 1973
BUFFALO was a hard rock band from Sydney, Australia. Formed in 1970 and releasing their proper debut in 1972, they actually preceded better-known Australian bands like AC/DC and ROSE TATTOO (of which BUFFALO bassist Peter Wells was also a member). Their sophomore release, Volcanic Rock, is widely considered to be the band's crowning achievement. Eschewing a great deal of the juvenile silliness and rootin'-tootin' that would plague subsequent releases, Volcanic Rock relies primarily on sludgy riffs, extended jams, and a bizarre side-long suite based on Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice. The album is actually very comparable to BLACK SABBATH. In fact, BUFFALO opened a tour for the mighty SABBATH, and by some accounts, blew them off the stage. Listen with an open mind and I assure you, you'll find this piece of history a rewarding addition to your collection.

High Tide- Sea Shanties- 1969
High Tide was a band formed in 1969. The trademark of their first album Sea Shanties was the constant battle between the electric guitar of Tony Hill and the electric violin of Simon House. There is hardly a quiet moment on Sea Shanties, the heaviest tracks being "Futilist's Lament" and the instrumental "Death Warmed Up". Stylistically it is a mix of hard rock, psychedelic, blues, folk, and jazz-rock, and is sometimes even cited as the first progressive metal album. [1] Allmusic author, Wilson Neate, had this to say of the group, "High Tide had the muscularity of a no-nonsense proto-metal band, but they also ventured into prog territory with changing time signatures and tempos, soft-hard dynamics, multi-part arrangements, and even some ornate faux-Baroque interludes."

Yesterday's Children- Self Titled- 1969
This elegant CD reissues the sole album by this obscure Connecticut group who recorded this one LP and a classic psychedelic garage punk single which appears on the Psychedelic Unknowns compilation. While the debut single was classic beat garage of the period 1966, by the 1969 album the group expanded into more hard rock and progressive styles -- and this album is drenched in the lead guitar blitz of Reggie Wright. The group was led by brothers Denis Croce on guitar and Richard Croce on vocals, and Chuck Maher and Ralph Muscatelli on bass and drums. The group is not to be confused with a Chicago-area group of the same name and era who appeared on the Pebbles box set. The reissue on Italian obscure specialist label Akarma is a stunning object to behold and an audiophile remaster of this underground classic.
