Damnation Of Aadam Blessing (Self-Titled)- 1970

The Damnation of Adam Blessing's debut LP was a fairly worthwhile, though inconsistent, record bridging the late psychedelic and early hard rock eras, with occasional strong traces of blues-rock, psychedelia, folk-rock, and pop. The group's strongest ace in standing out from what was, by 1969, a huge deck of new hard rock bands, was singer Adam Blessing, whose full-throated, husky vocals were — unlike those in so many other similar outfits of the time — powerful without being bombastic. The original material was often built around jagged riffs that were more blues-rock-influenced than bluesy. "Le Voyage" is a fairly good Midwestern spin on the kind of proto-psychedelic Yardbirds songs that had haunting choruses and background vocals, and sort of like some of the best efforts in that regard by the likes of, say, the Amboy Dukes: "Hold On" is similar, though not as good. On "Dreams," though, they could almost be an entirely different band, sounding more like the Strawberry Alarm Clock than anyone besides the Strawberry Alarm Clock themselves. As another change of pace, the harpsichord-speckled "Strings and Things" is almost a hard rock-Baroque rock fusion. The covers were indicative of the group's lack of consistent direction, though, with a pretty well-done cover of "Morning Dew," joined by a routine run-through of the blues standard "You Don't Love Me," and an odd, heavy, funk-rock version of the Monkees' "Last Train to Clarksville."

Giant Crab- A Giant Crab Comes Forth- 1968

Never thought you would hear a Jazzy Psych Pop/Rock album did you? A cool sounding and great album over all. Santa Barbara, California’s A Giant Crab Comes Forth featured the talents of siblings Ernie (vocals and guitar), Raymond (bass) and Ruben (drums) Oroscoe. With the line up rounded out by Dennis (drums) and Kenny (keyboards) Fricia, the group began playing local dances and clubs, eventually finding a mentor in local DJ Johnny Fairchild. With support from Fairchild the group debuted with a series of three little heard singles on the local Corby label.

While the singles failed to sell, outside of Southern California, they attracted the attention of Uni Records, which promptly signed the quintet to a recording contract.

Dust- Hard Attack- 1972

The missing link between Black Sabbath and Big Star, Dust were a hard rock trio from the early ’70s whose prog instincts were tempered with occasional twangy ballads and pretty boy lyrics (although I can’t confirm if they were, in fact, attractive. My guess is not.)

The factoid that usually pops up regarding this band is that their drummer, Mark Bell, later went on to become Marky Ramone, but make no mistake: the two Dust albums are nothing like the Ramones.

The first self-titled album is a mostly uninspired affair, but the second album ramps it up many, many notches, delivering an unusual, brightly colored take (lots of swirling riffs and fills) on the hard prog sound that made Uriah Heep and Sir Lord Baltimore so wonderfully fukkin’ awesome. Highly recommended.

The Third Power- Believe- 1970

The Third Power was Detroit’s answer to Cream back in the late 60′s to early 70′s and in fact did a rendition of “I’m So Glad” that rivaled anything Cream did. Third Power was intense sonic output, a power trio that used high output vacuum tube Traynor amps and pretty much did entirely original music. And they did it at volumetric decibles that surely contributed to hearing loss among many an aged hippie; the Who had little edge in that respect save they had a bigger PA system.

Third Power was always a draw at any Detroit venue and personally my other favourite Detroit group (SRC was first even though they were from Ann Arbor). This album is purely studio; way too produced and laden with overdubs impossible to duplicate live, at least with the technology available then (multi key synthesizers were light years away) and it was not strong enough to capture the all important top 40 FM market and most importantly, did not sell well outside of Detroit and related environs.

Still, it is well worth a listen and does represent an accurate accounting of the Detroit music scene along with some decent lyrics and musicianship. Should you have liked the MC-5 or The Frost, this would be the intensity of these groups amplified with a more cerebral appeal.

Song List:
1.Gettin' Together
2.Feel So Lonely
3.Passed By
4.Lost In A Daydream
5.Persecution
6.Comin' Home
7.Won't Beg Any More
